Arkansas Won’t Enforce Road Weight Limits Just Yet
February 10th, 2011 | by Matew Dow |QUITMAN – Arkansas highway officials say that, for now, they won’t enforce new weight limits proposed for highways in the Fayetteville shale drilling region.
Citing increased damage to roadways amid gas-drilling activity, the Highway and Transportation Department last month said it would limit weights on 133 miles of highways in Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, Independence, Van Buren and White counties. Now it says it will hold public hearings instead of starting enforcement next Monday.
Public meeting dates will be announced later.
Weight limits are at 80,000 pounds. Highway officials lowered limits to 73,280 pounds on some roads, and 64,000 pounds on others.
